Zhengkaofu was Confucius' ancestor(祖先), as well
as a minister(大臣) during the Spring and Autumn
Period(770-476 BC). He worked for three rulers(统
治者) in the state of Song. However, even with
such a high position, he was modest(谦虚的).
To teach his children to be modest, he made a
ding(鼎) with these words on it:"When I first
became a minister, I lowered my head. The next
 time I got a promotion(晋升), I lowered my head
even further. The time I got yet another promotion,
I bent over(弯下) even further at my waist(腰).
When I walk, I walk along the walls of the
buildings to leave the main road open for
others so that nobody will think I am arrogant(傲
慢的). But no one dares to look down at me or
 treat me badly.(一命而偻,再命三伛,三命而俯。循墙而走,
亦莫余敢侮。)"
The story became popular with people later.
Zhengkaofu is seen as a good example of modesty.
